"The establishment of our new Government seemed to be the last great experiment for promoting human happiness," — George Washington.
Our founding fathers forged this great nation from the principles of freedom, liberty, and justice. Chief among the founding fathers, George Washington led America from its birth onward in both war and peace, setting the stage for a successful experiment the likes of which the world has never seen.
In the nearly 250 years since its inception, "our new Government" has established a nation that invented the telephone, light bulb, aviation, and the internet; a nation that fought for a dream where all are created equal; a nation that maintained global freedom by driving the end of World War I, World War II, and the Cold War; a nation — the only nation — to put a man on the moon.
To celebrate America's incredible accomplishments and to commemorate the hero who led its creation, we are building a 500-foot-tall statue of George Washington for America's 250th anniversary: The Colossus of George. At its completion, it will be the largest monument in America. With its towering height, it will stand to oversee and inspire the growth of our country for centuries to come, just as Washington did before.
